Cancer and Massage
by: Caryn Cart, NCTMB
>- With a few exceptions, massage and cancer go together very well. While going through such a stressful event in your life you may find it comforting to get a massage. Having that extra touch can make all the difference in coping with this disease.
- Before you make your appointment to get a massage, you should always consult your physician. They are the best people to ask whether massage is right for your unique case. Depending on where in your body the cancer is and which stage it is at can affect your physician's decision to give you the go ahead to get a massage.
- When you finally get your massage, make sure you are comfortable with what your therapist is doing. It is wise to avoid the area(s) where cancer may be present. Chemotherapy and Radiation treatments can lower you platelet counts which can cause easy bruising. In this case, it is best to go with a lighter pressure for your massage. A lighter pressure is also important because you do not want to release too many toxins. Your body has enough to deal with as it is.
- When you find the right therapist you'll reap all kinds of benefits. If you have a Lymphatic based cancer, massage can reduce or even prevent Lymphedema. You'll find you have more energy, less pain, and you'll sleep much better. Other benefits include increased circulation, relaxation, decreased nausea, and a stronger immune system.
Testimonial
"Caryn is a multi-talented, multi-faceted massage therapist. Her skill level includes a wide variety of movements, pressure points, texture and most of all a variety of selections to chose which “type”of massage you would prefer. Ms. Cart is punctual for every appointment and comes prepared. My hip was out of alignment; in a few sessions she has performed a “miracle.”Both sides of my hips are straight! And there was NO PAIN during any treatments, just pure relaxation! Her massages leave me calm, relaxed and energized for several days. Please call me for a reference, 734.416.0988. Caryn is spectacular and very gifted. She knows “intuitively”where to release any stress or pain."
